Let it go, let the sky take it. Let the water carry it. Let the earth hold it. Because you don’t have to anymore.- Victoria Erickson.
When Anne Orlaw died on Sunday July 24, 2022 a bit of Nu-To-Yu went with her. Nu-To-Yu’s store manager for over a decade, Anne previously worked at Pender’s school as a teaching assistant. She then cared for her late husband for many, many years. At NTY Anne was the one who put the bags of assorted Christmas ornaments together for the princely sum of a loonie. After sorting and pricing on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Anne was a seller on Fridays. She had a garage filled with boxes to be sorted, which she did daily in the evenings at home. She was smart, she was kind and we miss her. We will remember her dry wit and the way she greeted us as if we were important to her, when really it was she that was important. Anne always said goodbye by thanking the volunteers for helping. Our final goodbye to her is said with a hug, a tear(s), and regret that there wasn’t more time. Thank you Anne for sharing your life with us.
Pender’s community thrift store will be shut from Saturday September17 to Monday October 3 inclusive. The two week closure is a well earned ‘time out’ for the volunteers whose last break from volunteering was a few days during Christmas 2021.
Please note that donations will not be accepted during our two week closure. The last donation day is Thursday September 15 ( 9am to 12pm). We reopen for donations Tuesday October 4. Please, no dumping of donations on our doorstep while the store is closed.
The final date to hand in grant applications is the third Friday in September. Fully completed grant applications that are not submitted by September 17th will need to wait until April 2023 to be next assessed. Information and forms are on our website and at the Dockside Driftwood office.
The start of September marks the end of Nu-To-Yu accepting summer and spring items. This includes shorts, capris, sleeveless tops, summer dresses. sandals and outdoor summer items. If these items have not been donated by now you will need to hold off until after Christmas. However, you are now welcome to donate winter clothes, shoes, boots and Halloween items. No Christmas items yet please, we will accept these once Halloween has come and gone. Don’t forget we accept two boxes or two bags ( ½ filled green garbage bags) per household per donation day. It is best to phone ahead if you wish to donate large items such as furniture. Call on donation days: Tuesday and Thursdays, 9am-12pm, 250-629-2070. Bring your own bag when shopping on Fridays. Cash in small denominations: coins, five and ten dollar bills are highly preferred.
Thank you to everyone who attended Nu-To-Yu’s silent auction on July 30 as well as a huge thank you also to the donors who made it possible. It was a hot day, a long day, but we did it. More than $8500 was earned for the building fund. See you at our next auction next year!
